Dissipationless Anomalous Hall Current in the Ferromagnetic Spinel Cucr 2 Se

چکیده
In a ferromagnet, an applied electric field E invariably produces an anomalous Hall current JH that flows perpendicular to the plane defined by E and M (the magnetization). For decades, the question whether JH is dissipationless (independent of the scattering rate), has been keenly debated without experimental resolution. In the ferromagnetic spinel CuCr2Se4−xBrx, the resistivity ρ (at low temperature) may be increased 1000 fold by varying x(Br), without degrading the M. We show that JH/E (normalized per carrier, at 5 K) remains unchanged throughout. In addition to resolving the controversy experimentally, our finding has strong bearing on the generation and study of spin-Hall currents in bulk samples.

High-precision realization of robust quantum anomalous Hall state in a hard ferromagnetic topological insulator.
The discovery of the quantum Hall (QH) effect led to the realization of a topological electronic state with dissipationless currents circulating in one direction along the edge of a two-dimensional electron layer under a strong magnetic field. The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect shares a similar physical phenomenon to that of the QH effect, whereas its physical origin relies on the intrinsi...
متن کاملBerry-phase effect in anomalous thermoelectric transport.
We develop a theory of the Berry-phase effect in anomalous transport in ferromagnets driven by statistical forces such as the gradient of temperature or chemical potential. Here a charge Hall current arises from the Berry-phase correction to the orbital magnetization rather than from the anomalous velocity, which does not exist in the absence of a mechanical force. A finite-temperature formula ...
متن کاملSwitchable quantum anomalous Hall state in a strongly frustrated lattice magnet.
We establish that the interplay of itinerant fermions with localized magnetic moments on a checkerboard lattice leads to magnetic flux phases. For weak itineracy the flux phase is coplanar and the electronic dispersion takes the shape of graphenelike Dirac fermions. Stronger itineracy drives the formation of a noncoplanar, chiral flux phase, in which the Dirac fermions acquire a topological mas...
متن کاملColloidal synthesis of magnetic CuCr2S4 nanocrystals and nanoclusters.
Nanocrystals and nanoclusters of the room-temperature magnetic spinel CuCr(2)S(4) have been synthesized using a facile solution-based method. The synthesis involves hot injection of an excess of 1-dodecanethiol (1-DDT) into a boiling coordinating solvent containing CuCl(2) and CrCl(3)·6H(2)O. Using octadecylamine (ODA) as a solvent yields cube-shaped nanocrystals with an average size of 20 ± 2 ...
متن کاملZero-Field Dissipationless Chiral Edge Transport and the Nature of Dissipation in the Quantum Anomalous Hall State.
The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect is predicted to possess, at a zero magnetic field, chiral edge channels that conduct a spin polarized current without dissipation. While edge channels have been observed in previous experimental studies of the QAH effect, their dissipationless nature at a zero magnetic field has not been convincingly demonstrated. By a comprehensive experimental study of ...
